What Hypnosis Really Feels Like (And What It Doesn’t)

Hypnosis can seem intimidating from the outside.

You may have seen it portrayed in TV shows and movies as something magicians use to put people completely under their control so they dance around the stage and cluck like a chicken.

Or maybe you think it’s this state where you have no control and will never remember what happens during hypnosis.

Or maybe you think it’s all just bullshit.

If you’re intimidated by hypnosis or curious but unsure what it actually is, I’m here to help clarify things.

Hypnosis is simply a highly relaxed and focused state where you’re able to access your subconscious mind.

That’s it.

If you’ve ever gotten really into the book you’re reading, the craft you’re doing, the song you’re playing, or if you’ve practiced meditation, you’ve already had some experience with this type of state.

You aren’t completely out of control. In fact, your mind can still wander just like it can when doing any of those other activities. You can still have thoughts that are totally your own.

I’m not controlling you. I’m simply guiding you.

I don’t swing a watch in front of your face or make you look at a swirling spiral to hypnotize you. I lead you through a kind of guided meditation to help you relax. From there we move through a portal in your mind so that you can access your past lives.

While under hypnosis, your body typically feels heavy and relaxed, like you’re getting close to a sleep state but not totally in it. It can feel like moving or opening your eyes would take extra effort.

During a past life regression session, many people see things from their past life in their mind’s eye. This is similar to when you imagine what things look like when reading a book or listening to a guided meditation.

It’s important not to get caught up in this idea that you’re “imagining things” in the sense that you’re making it all up. Past life hypnosis can feel very real to some people. For others it can feel more like imagination. But imagination can also be the bridge to the subconscious mind and past lives. It doesn’t mean it isn’t real.

Fixating on the idea that it’s “all in your head” and made up will be counterproductive to the process and bring you out of that relaxed state, thus making hypnosis temporarily unreachable.

In the same vein, some people don’t “see” things in their mind’s eye. Some people get impressions rather than full scenes. Some people get moments of clarity from a deep inner knowing. Some people have physical sensations. And some people have other experiences entirely. So if you’re one of these people, don’t assume something has gone wrong or think that it’s not working. Again, this panic will take you out of the hypnotic state.

“But what if I don’t remember any of it?”

This is not common, but it can happen. Some people are what we call “somnambulists,” meaning they can drop into a very deep state of hypnosis, but they don’t always remember what happened during their session. This isn’t a bad thing, in fact it usually means you can more easily access your subconscious and past lives. However, it can be a little unsettling afterwards. I’m there to guide you and ensure your comfort and safety throughout the session. I don’t let anything bad happen (one of the reasons I need to see your face during our session) and I’m there to go over what happened with you once I bring you out of hypnosis. Plus I record every session so you can go back and watch/listen to your session if you don’t remember.

I hope this has helped allay any fears or reservations you may have had about hypnosis.

It’s not scary, it’s not made up, it’s not a state where you lose control.
